Mexico has always had a vibrant and varied musical history and in recent years has produced some of the most forward-thinking composers and performers active today. The Festival of New Music from Mexico will showcase two such musicians and offer a representation of contemporary music from Mexico, spanning the past 70-plus years.
Georgia State University ensemble-in-residence Bent Frequency will host two evenings of concerts featuring music written by Mexican composers. Along with the GSU Orchestra, Percussion Ensemble, members of the Saxophone Studio, and the Creative Music Ensemble, Bent Frequency will perform music by contemporary Mexican composers. The concerts will feature guest soloist Dieter Hennings, guest conductor Juan Trigos and accordionist Eva Zöllner.
Internationally renowned composer and conductor Juan Trigos is the principal conductor of the Orquesta Sinfónica de Guanajuato in Guanajuato, Mexico. His work has been performed at internationally recognized ensembles and festivals. Guitarist Dieter Hennings is associate professor of music at the University of Kentucky. His musical interests range from contemporary music for guitar to early music for lute, baroque guitar, and theorbo. Hennings has been a soloist at numerous national and international concerts and is an active proponent of new music, particularly that of Latin America. Eva Zöllner, based in Hamburg, is one of the most active accordionists of her generation and devotes herself to contemporary music. In the last few years, she has premiered more than 100 new works for accordion.
